“Heart of a Hero” Nomination: April Dexter

We honor nurse practitioner April Dexter for championing quality health care in our rural communities! April was recently reappointed by Governor Pete Ricketts to Nebraska’s Rural Health Advisory Commission, made up of 13 members from across the state.

Some of the Commission’s efforts include establishing state-designated health care shortage areas and awarding rural student loans to eligible health professionals.

April lives in the country near Chambers, so she’s right in the midst of the rural communities she represents. Born and raised in a small town, she was taught to “Do unto others as you would want done to you.” She values being a part of her community, especially as it relates to kids’ activities and health care.

“I truly enjoy helping others,” says April. “Community is made up of people who take care of one another, help one another, and work together for a common goal.” This is the inspiration for her important work.

The Commission makes itself available to the legislature to give guidance on topics that come up in relationship to health care in rural Nebraska. In particular, they advocate for health care and patients, and help to recruit and retain health care providers throughout rural communities.

April herself is a nurse practitioner at West Holt Medical Services, near Atkinson, Nebraska.

We celebrate you, April, and thank you for your kind heart. You are a hero to us and to all those you serve!
