Your FMB Fraud Prevention Checklist

Scammers are getting better at what they do, and fraud can happen to anyone. Good people get caught off guard every day. That’s why the Farmers & Merchants Bank Fraud Squad put together this handy checklist for you to reference.
A few simple habits can make a real difference in keeping your money and your accounts safe.
Protecting Your Accounts
- Create a strong, unique password for your accounts and don’t reuse it anywhere else. If keeping track of multiple passwords is a hassle, a password manager can help.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for an extra layer of protection when you log in.
- Set up real-time alerts in your FMB mobile app or online banking. You’ll get a notification the moment a transaction hits your account.
- Review your accounts every few days. A quick look means you’ll catch something unusual before it becomes a bigger problem.
- Stay off public Wi-Fi when checking your accounts. Coffee shops and airports are convenient, but they’re also risky.
Stay Alert at ATMs
- Before inserting your card, take a quick look at the machine. If anything seems loose, broken, or just doesn’t look right, walk away.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If something feels off, trust that feeling and use a different machine.
- Report anything suspicious at an FMB ATM to your nearest branch right away. We want to know.
Spot the Red Flags
- Ignore any call, text, or email asking for your password, account number, or Social Security number. We will never ask for that information.
- Watch for phishing messages that look almost legitimate. Urgent warnings about your account, prize notifications, fake customer support calls, and pop-ups claiming your device is compromised are all common tactics.
- Be skeptical of small details that seem slightly off. A logo that doesn’t look right. An email address that’s close but not quite. Those details matter.
- Slow down if someone is rushing you or asking you to keep something secret. That’s a tactic, not a coincidence.
- Trust your gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Reach out to us before you do anything else.
If Something Goes Wrong
- Call us or stop in at your nearest FMB location as soon as possible. The faster you reach out, the faster we can help.
- Write down what happened while it’s fresh in your mind. Details like names, numbers, and timestamps help us move quickly.
- Don’t feel embarrassed. Report it. Fraud happens to careful, smart people and the only wrong move is waiting too long to say something.
Our Fraud Squad has two goals: protect our customers and stop fraud in its tracks.
